Brief history of Arcos de la Frontera

Arcos de la Frontera has an interesting historical past. There is evidence of the existence of population in this area since Prehistory (in Sierra de Aznar site), and its Roman foundation as coloniae Arcensium. It was also the capital of the Arkos Taifa in the Muslim period (11th century), which is evident in elements of the current city nowadays, such as the layout of the streets, the military quarterdeck, the wall, the mills… Also, in the 15th century it became the capital city of the Duchy of Arcos.

The history of Arcos continues throughout the centuries until it was consolidated as a tourist destination in the 20th and 21th centuries. It became the entrance of the White Villages and it was declared Conjunto Histórico-Artístico (Historic-Artistic Grouping).
